Stranger Than Fiction

Man on Wire

I love films. Some my favourites are documentaries. Man on Wire makes it to the top of the Rotten Tomatoes best film of all time. People who live on the edge of humanity can inspire, amuse and appall.  Here are some docos that are indeed stranger than fiction. Not to missed!!

Man on Wire – This is not only an incredibly well made film but an amazing feat of adventure and daring that is pure inspiration. About Frenchman Philippe Petit who manages a hire wire act between the twin towers in NY in 1974.

Touching the Void – Don’t miss this one. The most miraculous story of survival ever told. The true story of two climbers and their perilous journey up the west face of Siula Grande in the Andes.

Forbidden Lies – An Australian doco that is truly remarkable. “Forbidden Love” author Norma Khouri makes up her biographical tale of a Muslim friend who was killed for dating a Christian. Norma Khouri leads the doco maker on a fantastic and weirdly comical merry-go-round.

Capturing the Friedmans – For many it could be hard to sit all the way through this bizarre story of a Jewish family living in Long Island. Quite possible goes down as the weirdest true story ever told on film.

Big River Man – If there ever was a living superhero go no further than the podgy and big drinking Martin Strel of Slovenia, who in this doco swims the full length of the Amazon River and goes mad in the process. Or was he mad in the first place?

Grizzly Man – …and Treadwell is gone. Another extraordinary story. This one is of Timothy Treadwell who camps out with the Grizzly bears in Alaska. Devastating and heart rendering.
