Van Gough’s Starry Night Over the Rhone

It is entirely natural to fear death and question one’s place in the universe. So much beauty; so much creativity springs from depths of doubt and despair. What is the purpose of creativity in our lives? What is the job of an artist?

An artist should not succumb to despair but provide an antidote to the emptiness of existence. She should invoke within us an inkling that there is more than the physical things we experience here in this dimension. An artist’s canvas becomes an expression of hope.
